Water purification and pollution charges for residents

The amount due for the water purification or pollution charge for residents depends on the number of occupants at an address.

  • Do you live alone? Then you pay for 1 pollution unit (1 v.e.).
  • Do you live with two or more persons at an address? Then you pay for 3 pollution units (3 v.e.).

This is stipulated by the Water Board Act (Dutch only). Each year the Water Board sets the rate per pollution unit. GBLT receives information from the municipality about the number of occupants at an address.

What is a pollution unit?

A pollution unit represents the amount of pollution in the wastewater. The number of pollution units determines how much water purification charge or pollution charge you pay. On average, a multi-person household creates more wastewater than a single-person household. Therefore, a multiple-person household pays for more pollution units.

Why does a two-person household also pay for three pollution units?

The Water Board Act states in article 122h that households for a residential property pay for either one or three pollution units. Therefore, GBLT is prohibited grom charging two pollution units.

Relocating

Do you relocate within the area of the Water Board? Then the tax assessment will relocate with you. Next year you will receive the tax assessment at the new address.

Do you relocate to the area of another water board? Then you must pay the tax up to the date of relocation. Did you already pay in full? Then we will refund part of the payment.
