Water Board Tax

The Water Board maintains the dikes. And provides enough and clean water in your area. Therefore you can live, work and relax safely. The Water Board funds this with the taxes you pay. Every year the Water Board sets the rates for various taxes. This can be a fixed amount. Or a variable amount, like a percentage of your property value.

What does Vechtstromen do?

  • With 23 sewage treatment plants, they turn wastewater back into clean water. This is given back to nature via rivers, streams and ditches. For humans, plants and animals.
  • Where necessary, they work on safe quays and dikes.
  • They manage the water level in rivers, streams and canals with our 2,400 weirs and 170 pumping stations.
  • They maintain and mow 3,700 kilometers of rivers, streams and ditches.
  • To improve water quality and conditions for aquatic animals and aquatic plants, they will make 65 weirs passable for fish in the coming years, among other things.

What about climate change?

The changing climate poses major challenges. Prolonged rainfall, downpours and drought require solutions. Think about capturing water in many ways so that more water is available in dry times.

Noaberschap connects

Water boards face major challenges when it comes to climate change, new environmental policies and new sources of micro-pollution. Vechtstromen works together with other authorities on these challenges we all face. Vechtstromen also actively seeks contact with its residents, entrepreneurs and farmers in Southeast Drenthe, the Vecht valley and Twente.  If water plays a leading role in this, we step forward.

We are there for each other when necessary. Think of drought, flooding, dead fish in the pond or a ditch that has grown full and is causing problems. We also connect when our knowledge is desired. Is there an emergency, such as high water or pollution in the water? Then of course we go to work immediately to limit the consequences. Let's together take care of the water in our ditches, streams, canals and rivers and the nature around them.
Now.

Then there will also be clean, safe and sufficient water with healthy plants and animals for future generations.

Water Framework Directive and Vechtstroom

The Water Framework Directive is an European agreement to improve water quality in all European countries. We are also working hard on this in the Netherlands. Vechtstromen is jointly responsible for implementing measures to achieve the goals by the end of 2027. This is an enormous task, which costs a lot of effort and money. The total cost of the WFD measures taken by Vechtstromen is approximately 240 million euros. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are well on our way. For example, we are adapting various brooks by creating nature-friendly banks and removing (fish) barriers.
